The Bunso Cocoa College (BCC), a subsidiary of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has held its 3rd matriculation with a call on the students to study hard to excel in their studies.
Addressing the gathering on behalf of the Chief Executive, the Deputy Chief Executive of COCOBOD in charge of Agronomy & Quality Control, Dr. Ebenezer Owusu reiterated COCOBOD's commitment towards equipping the institute with the necessary support to ensure the continuous training of students and staff.
According to him, the move will support efforts at making BCC a centre of excellence, poised to provide top-notch knowledge in agricultural extension and agronomy for its students.
Congratulating the matriculants on their admission to BCC, Dr. Owusu advised them to exercise a high sense of discipline, hard work, and punctuality, and abide by all rules and regulations of the college to ensure a successful academic life on campus.
In her welcome statement, the Rector of the college, Dr. Mercy Asamoah disclosed that the college was established by COCOBOD in the 1950s, to run certificate and diploma programmes but has now advanced to run undergraduate courses.
She urged them to imbibe the core values of integrity, excellence, commitment and loyalty – virtues which have, over the years, contributed largely to building a reputable institute.
Dr. Asamoah further urged the newly admitted students to take inspiration from their predecessors, especially Abdulai Ismaila, who has become a staff of COCOBOD following his sterling performance which earned him the Overall Best Student award for the class of 2022.
Dr Asamoah also appealed to the management of COCOBOD and stakeholders to assist the College in building a new lecture block to accommodate the increase in admissions. A request for a 48-seater bus to enhance extracurricular activities was also made for consideration.
In a goodwill message read on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, (UCC), Professor Grace Vanderpuije, former Head of Department- Crop Science, University of Cape Coast (UCC) congratulated the students on their successful admission and advised them to observe the virtues of the college and its affiliated university.
‘This marks your formal admission as students of UCC’, she urged the students and admonished them to be discipline, committed and study diligently to uphold the academic standard of UCC as the 1st university in Ghana and West Africa, according to the recent World ranking of universities.
In all 65, students were matriculated to pursue a two-year Diploma Programme in Agronomy and Extension in Cocoa and Coffee Production.
Present at the ceremony were, Osabarima Abiam Brakatu Adinkra II, Chief of Bunso, Rev. Edwin Afari (Executive Director of CHED), Mr. Samuel Saka Boateng (Managing Director of QCC), Dr. Barnett Quaicoo (Manager of CMC), Mr. Oheneba Boamah, Human Resource Manager & Acting Registrar of BCC.
Also present were Dr. George Akumfi Ameyaw, Pathologist at CRIG, Dr. Silas W. Avicor, Entomologist at CRIG, Mr. Emmanuel Ewe, Chief Technical Officer and Mr. Geoffrey Opoku-Darko, Public Affairs Officer.
