COCOBOD PROJECT
FREE SEEDLING
DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMME
Every
year, Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) through the Seed Production Division (SPD)
raises disease-tolerant hybrid cocoa seedlings for distribution to farmers free
of charge. The initiative is aimed at increasing cocoa production and incomes
of cocoa farmers.
Distribution of the seedlings to farmers is mostly done from May – July every year to enable farmers plant them.
MODE OF DISTRIBUTION
1. The seedlings are raised by the Seed Production Division (SPD) at over 380 nursery sites established in communities across the cocoa regions.
2. The Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED) distributes the seedlings using farmer data.
BENEFITS OF THE FREE SEEDLING DISTRIBUTION PROGRAMME
The Seedlings are produced for the following
purposes:
· Support the establishment of new farms
· Support Farms under rehabilitation
· Replant burnt farms
· Fill vacancies on farms
COCOBOD is optimistic that the Free Seedlings Distribution programme will support cocoa farming and make it attractive to the younger generation
