CMC INAUGURATES FIRST PROFESSIONAL AND MANAGERIAL STAFF UNION

Date: 23rd May 2025

The Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC), a subsidiary of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has made history by inaugurating the first ever Professional and Managerial Staff Union (PMSU) under the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU-Ghana), ushering in a new era of organised representation for senior staff within the cocoa sector.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Cocoa House, saw the induction of a seven-member executive committee tasked with steering the affairs of the newly formed union.

The newly inducted executives are led by Brother Sampson Kwaku Amoako, who serves as Chairman. Sister (Mrs) Esther Effah Sasu has been appointed as the Vice Chairperson, while Brother Abdul Anas Mumuni takes on the role of Secretary. Assisting him is Brother Atta Ahenasa Yaw Adams, the Assistant Secretary. Brother Joseph Obeng Yeboah serves as an Executive Member. The Trustees are Sister Ivy Vinyo Konadu, appointed as the 1st Trustee, and Brother Benjamin Boateng, who serves as the 2nd Trustee.

Speaking on behalf of the new executives, Chairman Brother Sampson Kwaku Amoako said the PMSU is intended to complement existing structures such as the Union and Senior Staff Association. He emphasised unity and collaboration over division, noting that “two good heads are better than one.”

“We want to assure all associations of our fidelity to the cause of championing the collective responsibility of ensuring better working conditions for our members,” he stated.

He thanked CMC Management for the swiftness with which it responded to the processes leading to the formation and inauguration of the PMSU and promised that the group will offer unwavering support to Management to steer the affairs of CMC, assuring that they abide by all Company rules.

Brother Amoako emphasised that, despite the daunting tasks and challenges ahead, the PMSU is a formidable force capable of overcoming any obstacles. He called on all willing Senior Staff members who have not yet joined the PMSU to come on board without delay.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr. John Barnett Quaicoo, acting Deputy Managing Director in charge of Marketing at CMC, praised the formation of the Union and urged the leadership to embrace dialogue as a tool for resolving challenges.

“Gone were the days when one could not look at the faces of unionised staff. It is all about dialogue now. Let us work together for the collective good,” Dr Quaicoo emphasised.

He described the new executives as “vanguards” with a vital role in maintaining peaceful industrial relations.

Also addressing the gathering, Mr. Daniel Kofi Amoateng, Deputy Managing Director in charge of Operations, affirmed CMC’s tradition of excellence and urged the PMSU leadership to maintain unity in the execution of their mandate.

“Our doors are always open. Do not hesitate to contact us through suggestions, dialogue and advice,” he encouraged.

The executives were officially sworn into office by the General Secretary of ICU, Brother Morgan Ayawine, who administered the oath of office for a four-year tenure.
