Cocoa farmers across several cocoa-growing districts have expressed support for the proposed cocoa sector reforms, describing them as an important step toward protecting the future of Ghana’s cocoa industry.
During stakeholder meetings held in Koforidua, Dunkwa, Sefwi Wiawso, and Kumasi to sensitise farmers on the proposed cocoa sector reforms and the reviewed producer price, farmers welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with officials of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) to better understand the reforms and the proposed legislation intended to strengthen the sector.
Following presentations by the Deputy Head of Public Affairs, Benjamin Larweh, farmer leaders noted that the engagement had given them confidence that the reforms, once implemented, would not only help safeguard cocoa farmers’ incomes but also provide stronger protection against activities that threaten the industry, including illegal mining and the destruction of cocoa trees.
While acknowledging the challenges currently facing the sector, the farmers called for the swift passage of the proposed reforms to help stabilise the industry and secure long-term benefits for cocoa-growing communities. They also urged COCOBOD to fast-track the payment for all cocoa beans sold to the Board.
