Date: 02nd October 2025

The Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Authority in collaboration with the Western North regional office of Ghana Cocoa Board and the Ghana Tourism Authority has held a grand durbar on Thursday, 2nd October, 2025, to launch the maiden edition of “The Cocoa City Experience” event at Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North region.

The event aims to present Sefwi Wiawso town and municipality to the world as the capital of cocoa and celebrate the significant contribution of the enclave to Ghana’s economy through cocoa production.

Hon. Dominic Gyasi, Municipal Chief Executive of Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly, whose brilliant vision gave birth to the Cocoa City Experience, emphasised the need to institutionalise and celebrate Sefwi Wiawso as the Cocoa City in Ghana. He pledged the Assembly’s commitment to operationalising this vision and appealed to stakeholders, corporate entities, and individuals to support the initiative.

The Regional Administrator of COCOBOD, Mr Enoch K. Ampofo, conveyed felicitations from the Management of COCOBOD and acknowledged Sefwi Wiawso’s significant contribution to Ghana’s cocoa industry.

Mr Ampofo highlighted the collaboration between the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly and COCOBOD on the concept of an annual Cocoa festival, which celebrates the municipality as the capital city of the golden pod.

He reiterated COCOBOD’s continuous commitment to investing heavily in rehabilitating cocoa farms in the region to help the region’s quest to reclaim as the leading producer of cocoa while supporting this worthy course. He emphasised the importance of citizen ownership and participation in sustaining the festival, which he believes has the potential to drive massive traffic to the town.

A PowerPoint presentation on “From Seed to Success: The Journey of Cocoa Production” was delivered by Mr Frank Osei Kofi of CHED, Sefwi Wiawso, to educate the audience on best practices in the cocoa value chain.

Deputy Chief Executive of Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, pledged his support for the initiative, describing “The Cocoa City Experience” as a heritage journey that celebrates the resilience of Ghana’s farmers and the country’s golden bean.

Nana Eluo-Pann II, Kontihene of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, who chaired the event on behalf of the Omanhene of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Area, Katakyie Kwasi Bomangama, pledged the support of the traditional authorities to make “Cocoa City Experience 2025” a success.
