A 19-member delegation from the 8th Sustainable Phosphorus Summit, comprising scientists, researchers, and students from universities, research institutions, and agricultural organisations across Europe and Africa, paid a working visit to the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) at New Tafo on Friday, 3rd October 2025.
The visit, led by Prof. Phil Haygarth of Lancaster University, formed part of the summit’s programme of activities designed to expose participants to Ghana’s agricultural research institutions and their contributions to sustainable development.
Dr Daniel Nyadanu, Deputy Executive Director of CRIG (in charge of Kola), welcomed the delegation on behalf of the Executive Director and provided an overview of the Institute’s mandate. He highlighted CRIG’s vital role in supporting Ghana’s cocoa industry through cutting-edge research and innovation in soil fertility management, crop improvement, and sustainable agricultural practices. These efforts, he noted, continue to enhance productivity and maintain Ghana’s competitive edge in the global cocoa market.
The delegation toured key CRIG facilities, including the New Product Development Unit and the Fine Flavour Laboratory, where they were introduced to ongoing research in product diversification, value addition, and cocoa flavour profiling. The visit showcased CRIG’s pioneering contributions to sustaining the premium quality and international reputation of Ghana’s cocoa.
Mr Eric Mensah, leader of the delegation, expressed appreciation to CRIG’s Management and staff for their warm hospitality and commended the Institute’s leadership in agricultural research. He encouraged CRIG to continue advancing innovations that support both national and international efforts in sustainable agriculture.
Also present at the meeting were Mr Jerome Dogbaste, Head of the Soil Science Division; Dr Godfred Ewusi, Head of the Entomology Division; and Mr Prince Pobi.
